ARAU Guided Tours Brussels
Description
ARAU, the Atelier de Recherche et d’Action Urbaines, is a non-profit organisation founded in 1969 that has played a significant role in the preservation and promotion of Brussels’ architectural and urban heritage. Today ARAU is best known for its programme of specialist guided tours, which provide some of the most intellectually rich and visually rewarding ways to discover Brussels. The organisation draws on decades of urban research and advocacy to offer tours that go far beyond standard sightseeing, contextualising the built environment within the social, political, and economic history of the city. The tour programme is diverse and consistently updated, covering themes such as the Art Nouveau heritage of Victor Horta and his contemporaries, the Beaux-Arts and neoclassical architecture of the historic centre, the transformations of the European Quarter, modernist housing estates, and contemporary architectural projects. Tours are conducted on foot, by bus, and by boat, allowing participants to explore different scales and perspectives of the city. Many tours are led by architects, urban planners, and historians with deep specialist knowledge. ARAU also offers thematic tours that examine the social history of working-class districts, the legacy of urban renewal projects, and the ongoing evolution of Brussels as a European capital. Tours are available in French, Dutch, and English and are suitable for general audiences as well as design and architecture professionals. Group bookings are warmly welcomed and customised programmes can be developed for educational institutions, companies, and associations.
