Description

Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata is India’s most visited museum, attracting millions of visitors each year to its 25 galleries spread across one of the finest marble buildings in the country. Conceived by Lord Curzon and inaugurated in 1921 in memory of Queen Victoria, this magnificent white marble structure was built using Makrana marble from Rajasthan, the same material used for the Taj Mahal. Set on 64 acres of beautifully landscaped Mughal gardens, the monument houses over 28,000 artefacts documenting the history of British India, the Indian independence movement, and the cultural heritage of Bengal and the subcontinent. Its collection includes paintings, prints, sculptures, maps, manuscripts, rare coins, weapons, and personal belongings of colonial-era figures and Indian royalty. Among the most prized exhibits are oil paintings by noted colonial artists, rare letters and manuscripts documenting the Raj period, and an impressive collection of Calcutta memorabilia. The Royal Gallery and the Portrait Gallery are among the most popular sections. The museum also houses a sound and light show in the evenings. Under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Victoria Memorial Hall remains a symbol of Kolkata’s grandeur and serves as both a tribute to history and a vibrant centre of education and public engagement.
