The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi is India’s foremost institution dedicated to the collection, preservation, and promotion of modern and contemporary Indian art. Established in 1954 and housed in the former Jaipur House near India Gate, the gallery holds a permanent collection of over 17,000 works covering the period from 1857 onwards. It traces the evolution of Indian art from the Bengal School and the Company Paintings of the colonial era through to contemporary installations and experimental works. Among its greatest treasures are paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, and Amrita Sher-Gil, alongside works by the Progressive Artists Group including M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, and V.S. Gaitonde. The gallery regularly organises major national and international exhibitions, artist residencies, educational programmes, and art camps. NGMA also has two additional branches, one in Mumbai and one in Bengaluru, making it a national network of modern art. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, it is under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The gallery serves as an essential destination for art lovers, curators, scholars, and students seeking to understand the rich trajectory of Indian visual culture over the past 170 years.
