Description

The Suntory Museum of Art, located on the third floor of the Galleria building within the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi, was founded in 1961 by Keizo Saji of Suntory Holdings based on his belief that beauty should be part of everyday life. The museum’s guiding philosophy is captured in the phrase art in life, and this vision shapes every aspect of its curatorial approach and collection. The permanent collection comprises over 3,000 works of pre-modern Japanese art including glass, lacquerware, ceramics, textiles, paintings, and metalwork, alongside important items from China and Korea. The museum’s building was designed by architect Kengo Kuma and features a warm interior rich with natural materials, traditional latticework, and a tearoom that reinforces the connection between art and daily life. Temporary exhibitions change several times a year and frequently focus on particular themes in Japanese aesthetics such as the beauty of glass, the art of textile dyeing, or the culture of tea. The museum sits within the Art Triangle Roppongi alongside the Mori Art Museum and the National Art Center, Tokyo. It is directly connected to Roppongi Station via Exit 8 of the Oedo Subway Line. As of early 2026 the museum is temporarily closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in late spring 2026; please check the official website before visiting.
