Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Description
The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, known as TOP Museum, is Japan’s first public museum dedicated exclusively to the art of photography and moving images. Located within the Yebisu Garden Place complex in the upscale Ebisu district of Meguro, the museum opened in 1995 and has established itself as a vital institution for the study, preservation, and exhibition of photographic culture in Japan and internationally. The permanent collection numbers over 35,000 works, spanning the full arc of photographic history from early daguerreotypes and vintage silver prints to contemporary digital works and video installations. The museum’s three main exhibition galleries host over 20 different shows per year, encompassing both historical retrospectives and cutting-edge contemporary photography. Subjects range from Japanese documentary photography and landscape imagery to experimental and conceptual photographic practice from around the world. The museum also maintains a library with over 73,000 books and periodicals on photography, open to the public for research purposes. A cinema hall on the ground floor screens a continuous programme of films and documentaries selected for their artistic and cultural significance. The museum is a 7-minute walk from JR Ebisu Station and accessible via a covered walkway from the station, making it an all-weather destination. Admission fees vary by exhibition, with some shows offering free entry.
