Moroccan Workshop – Fes Leather
Description
The Fes Leather Workshop offered by Moroccan Workshop is one of the most distinctive artisan experiences available in Morocco’s imperial leather capital. Fes has been synonymous with exceptional leather production for over a thousand years, and the city’s Chouara Tannery remains one of the most iconic images of Moroccan craft at work. This workshop takes participants directly into the leather artisan community, allowing them to hand-stitch their own pair of traditional Fassi yellow babouche slippers under the close supervision of a professional leatherworker. Participants learn about the different types of leather used in Fassi production: goatskin for the upper, cowhide for the sole, and soft sheepskin for the lining. The session covers the cutting, shaping, and stitching techniques that have been handed down through generations of Fes artisan families. Beyond the babouche workshop, participants may also choose leather book-cover making or belt crafting sessions. The workshop is conducted in small groups within an authentic leather workshop venue in the Fes medina, offering a genuine behind-the-scenes view of one of Morocco’s most celebrated artisan industries. All tools and materials are provided, and participants take home their finished leather piece at the end of the session. Sessions are bookable online and are available to all skill levels.
