Chetana Vegetarian Restaurant
Description
Chetana Vegetarian Restaurant is one of Mumbai’s most historically significant dining establishments, having first opened its doors in 1946 as a small sandwich and coffee corner serving the city’s intellectuals and artists. Located in the cultural heart of Kala Ghoda at 34 K Dubash Marg, opposite the Jehangir Art Gallery, Chetana has grown over eight decades into a beloved institution renowned for its authentic vegetarian thalis. Today the restaurant serves buffet-style and sit-down thali meals showcasing the culinary traditions of Gujarat and Rajasthan, with the multicuisine menu expanded in 2001 to include a broader range of Indian regional dishes. The Gujarati Thali and Rajasthani Thali are the undisputed stars of the menu, each arriving with an abundance of lovingly prepared dishes — dals, sabzis, rotis, chutneys, pickles, sweets, and chaas — all refillable and presented with exceptional care. Chetana is more than a restaurant; the premises also house the Chetana Book Centre, a bookshop specialising in Indian philosophy and spirituality, and a boutique carrying Indian handloom garments. The founder’s philosophical heritage continues to shape the atmosphere, making meals here feel like a cultural and sensory experience as much as a culinary one. Vegan-friendly modifications are readily accommodated. Chetana is open daily for lunch and dinner and remains one of South Mumbai’s most warmly regarded dining institutions.
