Tissage Moutet
Description
Tissage Moutet is one of France’s most celebrated artisan textile enterprises, a fifth-generation family workshop operating continuously in Orthez in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques since Jean-Baptiste Moutet established his fabric store in 1874. Today under Benjamin Moutet, the workshop employs seventeen specialist trades in its Orthez atelier, producing every product from design through weaving and finishing exclusively on site. The workshop masters two distinct weaving traditions: the ancestral Basque linen, woven in natural cotton and linen fibers with the characteristic colored stripes and geometric patterns of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques — now an official Geographical Indication — and the Jacquard technique, introduced in the 1950s, enabling complex pictorial patterns. This has enabled celebrated collaborations with international artists and designers. The Toiles de Maîtres collection reproduces the works of Magritte, Picasso, Miró, and Fernand Léger in woven form, alongside tea towels and tablecloths by leading contemporary creatives. The factory shop in Orthez is open year-round Monday to Saturday, with guided workshop tours by reservation each Thursday from March to December. An active online shop ships internationally, and Michelin-starred restaurants and prestigious cultural institutions regularly commission bespoke Moutet creations.
