Riad Belghazi Museum – Fès
Description
The Riad Belghazi Museum in Fès is a one-of-a-kind cultural space that blurs the boundary between a private family home and a museum. Owned and operated by the Belghazi family, one of Fès’s most distinguished collector dynasties, the museum occupies a beautifully restored traditional riad that has belonged to the family for generations. Unlike state-run institutions, Riad Belghazi functions as a living museum where members of the Belghazi family personally guide visitors through rooms filled with extraordinary treasures accumulated over centuries of passionate collecting. The collection spans a remarkable breadth of Moroccan material culture: antique silver jewelry from the early 18th century, ornate wedding crowns, daggers and ceremonial weapons, embroidered textiles, ancient musical instruments, carved wooden furniture, carved plaster architectural fragments, illuminated manuscripts, and ceramics. Many of the displayed pieces date from the 17th century and reflect the refined artistic traditions of the Fassi elite. What makes the Riad Belghazi particularly unique among Morocco’s cultural sites is that a significant portion of the displayed antiques are available for purchase, making it a dream destination for collectors and lovers of authentic Moroccan craft. The intimate atmosphere, the guidance of knowledgeable family members, and the authenticity of the setting create an experience unlike any other in Fès. Visits should be arranged in advance as the museum operates on a private basis.
