Musée La Kasbah des Cultures Méditerranéennes – Tanger
Description
The Musée La Kasbah des Cultures Méditerranéennes is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in northern Morocco, managed by the National Foundation of Museums (Fondation Nationale des Musées). It is housed in the historic Dar El Makhzen palace, a former sultan’s residence built in the 18th century during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail, situated at the heart of Tangier’s Kasbah atop the city’s highest point. The palace’s commanding position offers sweeping panoramic views over the medina, the port, and the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet. The museum, recently refurbished and modernized, traces the history of the northern Morocco region and its connections to Mediterranean civilizations from prehistoric times through the 19th century. Its collections are divided thematically and include extraordinary Roman and Punic archaeological finds from nearby sites such as Volubilis, Lixus, Sala, and Cotta. The museum’s most celebrated object is the Venus mosaic from Volubilis, a breathtaking example of Roman craftsmanship. Other highlights include pre-Islamic ceramics, Islamic metalwork, Moroccan arms and armor, regional costumes, carpets from Rabat and the Rif, embroideries from Fès and Tetouan, and Jewish ceremonial objects. An Andalusian garden within the palace courtyard, planted with orange trees and aromatic plants, provides a tranquil setting for visitors. The Treasury Room contains ornate iron-clad boxes with complex mechanical locking systems.
