Musée Mohammed VI d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (MMVI)
Description
The Musée Mohammed VI d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (MMVI) is the most significant cultural institution to be built in Morocco since the country’s independence from France in 1956. Inaugurated on 7 October 2014 by King Mohammed VI in Rabat, the museum was the first Moroccan public institution designed and constructed to meet international museographic standards. Located at the intersection of Avenue Moulay Hassan and Avenue Allal Ben Abdallah in the heart of the capital, the building was designed by Moroccan architect Karim Chakor. Its white facade with double-arched colonnades draws on classical Andalusian and Arab-Moorish motifs, while the interior offers a light-filled, contemporary experience across three floors totalling 9,400 square metres. The MMVI is one of fourteen museums within the national network of the Fondation Nationale des Musées. Its permanent collection traces the evolution of Moroccan plastic and visual arts from the early 20th century to the present, featuring works by over 200 Moroccan artists including Chaïbia Talal, Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Mohamed Kacimi, Hassan El Glaoui, Abbes Saladi, and Lalla Essaydi. The museum has also hosted landmark international exhibitions including Face à Picasso in 2018, the first time Picasso’s works were shown in the Maghreb. Facilities include a large temporary exhibition hall, an auditorium, educational workshops, a research library, a bookshop, and a restaurant terrace. In 2021, the museum installed solar panels, becoming Africa’s first green museum.
