Musée de la Kasbah – Espace d’Art Contemporain (Ancienne Prison)
Description
The Musée de la Kasbah – Espace d’Art Contemporain is one of Tangier’s most compelling recent cultural additions, inaugurated on 23 December 2021 by the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco (FNM) under the direction of Mehdi Qotbi. The institution is housed in the historic former prison of the Kasbah, a structure built in the 17th century as part of the Kasbah Palace compound and which remained an active detention facility until the 1970s. Its transformation into a contemporary art museum represents the third cultural institution opened by the FNM in Tangier in recent years, alongside the Villa Harris Museum and the refurbished Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures. The museum was conceived as a space dedicated to highlighting the artistic legacy of the Northern School Movement, a group of Moroccan painters whose work was strongly influenced by the unique light, landscapes, and cultural mix of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. The former prison’s evocative architecture, with its stone cells and vaulted corridors, provides an atmospheric setting that contrasts powerfully with the contemporary works displayed within. The museum’s mission is to transform a site formerly associated with constraint and suffering into a place of creative expression, cultural dialogue, and community engagement. Its programme includes rotating exhibitions by both established and emerging Moroccan artists from the northern region, alongside residencies, workshops, and public events. The museum is managed by the FNM and shares the same central Kasbah location as the Musée de la Kasbah des Cultures Méditerranéennes.
