Mosquée Hassan II – Visites Guidées
Description
The Mosquée Hassan II is one of the most extraordinary architectural achievements of the 20th century and the most visited cultural landmark in Casablanca. Completed in 1993 after seven years of construction under the direction of King Hassan II and designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, the mosque stands on a promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, inspired by the Quranic verse that God’s throne was upon the water. The statistics are staggering: the mosque covers 9 hectares, accommodates up to 105,000 worshippers simultaneously, and its soaring minaret at 210 metres is the second tallest in the world, topped by a laser directed towards Mecca that is visible from 30 kilometres away. The construction involved 10,000 artisans and craftsmen from across Morocco working in cedar, marble, stucco, tadelakt, zellige, and hand-hammered copper, all executed according to the most refined traditions of Moroccan craftsmanship. The mosque is the only one in Morocco where non-Muslim visitors are admitted, through official guided tours organized by the Hassan II Mosque Foundation. The tours, which last approximately 45 minutes, take visitors through the vast prayer hall with its retractable roof, the richly decorated galleries, the hammam complex, and the ablution areas, with multilingual guides providing historical and architectural commentary. The mosque also houses one of Casablanca’s most impressive underground hammam complexes, covering 6,000 square metres. Tours operate daily at fixed hours from Saturday to Thursday, with limited slots on Fridays.
