Description

AlVelAl is a Spanish territorial association working to reverse land degradation and promote regenerative agriculture in the Altiplano Estepario region of southeastern Spain — an area spanning parts of the provinces of Almería, Granada, and Murcia. Based in Vélez-Blanco, the organization takes a landscape-level approach to sustainability, recognizing that lasting ecological and economic transformation requires coordinated action across entire territories rather than individual farms. AlVelAl works with farmers, landowners, municipalities, businesses, and citizens to develop and implement regenerative land management practices that restore soil health, increase water retention, enhance biodiversity, and rebuild the productive capacity of degraded landscapes. The organization uses the Savory Institute’s Holistic Planned Grazing methodology as one key tool, alongside a range of other regenerative techniques. AlVelAl is part of an international network of regenerative agriculture initiatives and has attracted significant attention as a pioneering example of territory-scale ecological restoration combined with viable farming economies. The association also works to develop market access and sustainable tourism opportunities linked to regenerative production, helping farmers earn fair returns while rebuilding ecosystems. Its work has implications not only for southeastern Spain but for dryland farming regions worldwide facing similar challenges of desertification and rural decline.
