Al Shindagha Museum
Description
Al Shindagha Museum is an expansive open-air heritage institution situated in the historic Al Shindagha neighbourhood on the banks of the Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai. As the largest heritage museum in the UAE, it comprises over 80 meticulously restored heritage houses and 22 thematic pavilions, each dedicated to a distinct dimension of Emirati culture, tradition, and history. Managed by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the museum was inaugurated in its current comprehensive form in early 2023 following years of careful preservation and development work. Through advanced multimedia technology, augmented reality installations, archival photography, and authentic archaeological artefacts, the museum brings Dubai’s layered past to life for visitors of every age and background. Key pavilions include Dubai Creek: Birth of a City, a flagship multimedia experience chronicling the Creek’s central role in shaping the emirate’s development, as well as the Perfume House, which explores the region’s deep aromatic heritage, and the Al Maktoum Residence, the ancestral home of Dubai’s ruling family that offers intimate insight into the city’s leadership and vision. The Saruq Al-Hadid section presents an interactive simulation of an Iron Age archaeological excavation discovered in the Rub’ al Khali desert. Guided tours and weekend workshops provide hands-on engagement with traditional crafts, Arabic coffee-making, and Emirati storytelling. The museum is conveniently accessible via the Al Ghubaiba Metro Station on the Green Line, is fully wheelchair accessible throughout all areas, and opens its doors to visitors seven days a week.
