Chowmahalla Palace, Hyderabad
Description
Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad is one of the most remarkable heritage complexes in India, serving as the official residence and seat of power of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, the Nizams of Hyderabad, from 1720 to 1948. The name Chowmahalla means four palaces in Urdu, referring to the four neoclassical palaces arranged around central fountains and pools in the southern courtyard. Construction began under Nizam Ali Khan Asaf Jah II in 1769 and was completed under Afzal ad-Dawlah in 1869. The palace complex covers approximately 14 acres near the Charminar and incorporates a spectacular blend of Persian, Indo-Saracenic, Mughal, and European architectural styles. The heart of the complex is the Khilwat Mubarak, or Grand Durbar Hall, renowned for its 19 Belgian crystal chandeliers, an ornate mechanical clock that has functioned for over 250 years, and the marble throne platform. The palace was opened to the public in 2005 following an extensive five-year restoration project under the patronage of Princess Esra Birgen, which earned a UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2010. The museum displays rare manuscripts, paintings, photographs, textiles, arms, and maps associated with the Nizams, while the Buggie Khaana exhibits a collection of vintage cars including a 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. The palace is open Saturday through Thursday from 10:00 to 17:00.
