Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum
Description
The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is Mumbai’s oldest and most storied cultural institution, originally established in 1872 during the colonial era as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Located in the historic Byculla neighbourhood, the museum underwent a landmark restoration project that was awarded a UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award for Conservation Excellence in 2005. The museum is dedicated entirely to the cultural and social history of Mumbai, housing an extraordinary collection of decorative arts, maps, archival photographs, models, and artefacts that chronicle the city’s transformation from a collection of fishing villages into a cosmopolitan metropolis. Exhibits include rare lithographs, botanical illustrations, terracotta figurines, metalwork, woodwork, and paintings documenting everyday life across centuries. The museum’s architecture is itself a treasure, featuring a Victorian-era façade with Italianate ornamentation and beautifully restored interiors. The institution regularly hosts contemporary exhibitions, educational programmes, and community engagement events that connect Mumbaikars with their urban heritage. Open Thursday through Tuesday, the museum is managed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and has become a model for urban heritage conservation across South Asia. It is situated near the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, adding to the cultural richness of Byculla’s historic precinct.
