Description

The Fukagawa Edo Museum in Koto Ward is one of Tokyo’s most immersive and underrated historical attractions, offering a rare full-scale recreation of daily life in Edo-period Tokyo. Established in 1986 and operated by the Koto Ward Culture and Community Foundation, the museum centers on a meticulous indoor replica of the Fukagawa Saga-cho neighborhood as it appeared during the Tenpo era of around 1840. The exhibition hall accommodates eleven complete structures including long-houses known as nagaya, merchant shops, a fish store, a vegetable market, a boathouse with a vessel floating on actual water, a fire watchtower, a tea stall, and a tempura street food stand. Visitors are encouraged to enter the buildings, touch the objects inside, and interact with the detailed period furnishings. Sound effects, dynamic lighting that simulates the changing times of day and seasons, and ambient natural sounds such as cicadas and rain create a genuinely atmospheric experience. Each of the fictional residents of the replica neighborhood has been given a specific identity, age, and occupation, lending humanity and depth to the recreation. English-speaking volunteer guides are available on most days and add context and storytelling to the experience. The museum is a three-minute walk from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station and pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo or Kiyosumi Gardens.
