Government Museum, Chennai (Madras Museum)
Description
The Government Museum, Chennai, commonly known as the Madras Museum, holds the distinction of being the second oldest museum in India, established in 1851 during the British Raj. Located in the Egmore district on Pantheon Road, the museum spans an impressive campus with 6 buildings and 46 galleries that collectively contain one of the most diverse museum collections in South Asia. It is particularly celebrated for its extraordinary collection of South Indian bronzes, including several masterworks of Chola-period metalwork regarded as among the finest sculptures ever produced in India. The museum also houses the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe, including glass, pottery, and coins found at the ancient trading port of Arikamedu, evidencing ancient commercial links between Rome and southern India. Other key collections include pre-historic tools and Neolithic pottery, Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist sculptures from across Tamil Nadu, Vijayanagara-era exhibits, natural history specimens, an impressive numismatic section, and Buddhist antiquities from Amaravati. The Children’s Museum engages young visitors with interactive exhibits, while the National Art Gallery within the premises houses a fine collection of Indian miniature paintings and Company-style works. Open on most days except Fridays and national holidays, the museum remains central to Chennai’s cultural identity and scholarly life.
