Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA), New Delhi
Description
The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is India’s first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art from India and South Asia. Founded in 2010 by art collector and philanthropist Kiran Nadar, supported by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, the museum is located in the DLF South Court Mall in Saket, New Delhi. KNMA operates as a non-commercial, not-for-profit organisation and is committed to making art accessible to broad and diverse audiences. Its collection of over 16,000 artworks spans the 3rd century BCE through to the 21st century, encompassing classical, folk, tribal, and contemporary art. The museum holds historically significant works by some of India’s greatest artists including Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher-Gil, M.F. Husain, Tyeb Mehta, V.S. Gaitonde, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, and Anish Kapoor, alongside emerging South Asian artists. Its programme includes research-intensive exhibitions, lectures, artist talks, symposiums, community outreach initiatives, youth and education programmes, and international collaborations. In 2019, world-renowned architect David Adjaye was selected to design a major new 100,000 square foot building for KNMA near Indira Gandhi International Airport, planned as one of South Asia’s largest cultural centres. KNMA Saket is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 to 18:30, with free admission, and has established itself as an essential destination for art lovers, students, and cultural professionals.
