Description

The Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum, located in Bhopal, is one of India’s most innovative and celebrated cultural institutions. Inaugurated on June 6, 2013, by former President Pranab Mukherjee, the museum was conceived and commissioned by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to honour and preserve the living heritage of the state’s indigenous communities. Spread across seven acres on Shyamala Hills, the museum is dedicated to the seven major tribes of Madhya Pradesh: the Gond, Bhil, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol, and Bhariya. Designed by noted architect Revathi Kamath, the museum blends organic forms and natural materials to create a space that feels as alive as the cultures it celebrates. Six thematic galleries guide visitors through the tribal way of life, encompassing lifestyle, spiritual traditions, folklore, mythology, children’s games, and a special gallery dedicated to the tribes of neighbouring Chhattisgarh. Full-scale recreations of tribal homes built from mud and bamboo, vibrant terracotta sculptures, and intricate displays of traditional jewellery, textiles, and ceremonial objects immerse visitors in a world rarely encountered elsewhere. The museum houses a boutique outlet called Chinhari selling authentic tribal handicrafts, an auditorium for cultural performances, and an on-site restaurant. Since June 2022, a virtual digital tour has also been made available, categorised into ten curated sections. The museum hosts regular events including talk shows, poetry readings, dance performances, and film screenings rooted in tribal cultural expression. It remains closed on Mondays and state holidays and is open from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday.
