Description

The Musée de la Fondation Abderrahman Slaoui is one of Casablanca’s most cherished cultural institutions, founded in 2012 to honour the legacy of businessman, collector, and art patron Abderrahman Slaoui, who passed away in 2001. The museum occupies a charming three-storey Art Deco villa dating from the 1940s at 12 Rue du Parc, in the heart of Casablanca’s historic district, just a short walk from the Mohammed V tramway stop. Covering 600 square metres, the museum houses Slaoui’s eclectic and carefully assembled private collection, which includes over a century of Orientalist posters commissioned from celebrated painters such as Jacques Majorelle, Charles Halo, and Joseph de la Nézière. These vivid posters, once used by travel agencies and companies to promote exotic North African destinations, represent one of the most comprehensive collections of their kind in the world. Alongside the poster collection, the museum displays 18th- and 19th-century Moroccan gold jewelry from Fes, miniature paintings, 19th-century Bohemian crystal boxes, and figurative works by early modern Moroccan master painter Muhammad Ben Ali Rabati. The scenography, designed by French designer Philippe Délis, evokes the intimacy of a traditional Moroccan home. Quarterly temporary exhibitions feature contemporary Moroccan artists working in photography, sculpture, and mixed media. Artistic workshops in calligraphy, tapestry, and photography are also offered to the public. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM.
