Musée de la Musique de Marrakech

The Musée de la Musique de Marrakech is one of the city’s most captivating cultural institutions, situated in a beautifully restored Saadian riad from the 18th century in the heart of the medina. Founded by the same curator behind the Maison de la Photographie, the museum presents the rich diversity of Moroccan music — from Arabo-Andalusian and Amazigh traditions to Gnawa, Sufi, and African musical forms. Visitors explore the museum through an immersive journey that combines audio installations, archival recordings, video presentations, and a curated collection of traditional instruments, many of which are available to play on the museum’s upper floor. Displays highlight the historical and cultural significance of instruments such as the guembri, the hajhuj, the bendir, and the oud, while panels explain the spiritual and social contexts in which different musical traditions developed in Morocco. The museum is open every day from 10 AM to 7 PM and is linked to the Maison de la Photographie by a combined ticket, offering excellent value for visitors interested in Moroccan cultural heritage. A rooftop café provides stunning views over the medina rooftops and the Atlas Mountains. The museum also hosts live musical performances three evenings per week in the atmospheric Mouassine Douiria, featuring arabo-andalusian, Amazigh, and Gnawa musicians. Tickets for concerts must be reserved in advance.
