Description

The Musée National de la Bijouterie, or National Museum of Jewelry, is one of the most exceptional cultural institutions within the Fondation Nationale des Musées network. It is situated within the historic walls of the Kasbah des Oudayas, Rabat’s iconic 12th-century Almohad citadel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Bou Regreg River. The museum occupies a restored building within the kasbah and presents an extraordinary collection of Moroccan jewelry spanning from ancient times to the modern era, with particular emphasis on the royal and aristocratic traditions of the successive dynasties that shaped Moroccan culture. The collection includes exceptional pieces in gold and silver, such as traditional wedding jewelry from the cities of Fès, Rabat, Tetouan, and Meknes, regional Amazigh silver jewelry from the Atlas and Souss areas, elaborate fibulae, diadems, earrings, belts, and necklaces encrusted with coral, amber, and enamel. Interpretive displays explain the social and symbolic significance of jewelry in Moroccan culture, including its role in women’s status, regional identity, religious practice, and ceremonial life. The museum also showcases the techniques of traditional Moroccan goldsmiths and silversmiths, with examples of enamel work, filigree, granulation, and stone setting. Visitors to the museum can also explore the kasbah’s famous blue-and-white Andalusian garden and enjoy panoramic views of the coast and the river estuary.
