Description

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, widely known as MOT, opened in March 1995 in the eastern Koto ward and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025. It is one of the largest museums dedicated to contemporary art in Japan, offering three floors of temporary exhibition space alongside two floors of permanent collection galleries. The MOT Collection comprises approximately 6,000 works of art and 280,000 library reference materials, covering postwar Japanese and international art from the mid-20th century to the present day. The collection reflects a broad sweep of contemporary practice including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, design, fashion, and architecture. Major retrospectives and thematic group shows draw significant critical attention and are staged throughout the year. The library, one of the most comprehensive art research collections in Japan, is open to the public and holds an irreplaceable archive of exhibition catalogues, monographs, and periodicals. MOT is situated next to the lush greenery of Kiba Park, providing a calm and spacious environment that sets it apart from many of Tokyo’s more central museums. The on-site restaurant and cafe offer high-quality dining with garden views. A bookshop selling artist publications and art-related merchandise is also on the premises. The museum is a 9-minute walk from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line.
