Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik
Description
The Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik, known locally as Umjetnička galerija Dubrovnik, is the principal art museum in the southern Dalmatian region and one of the most important institutions for modern and contemporary art in Croatia. Founded in 1945, the museum is housed in a distinguished early twentieth-century villa in the Ploče district, just east of the Old City, with a commanding position overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The setting alone makes a visit memorable, combining the cultural experience of the collection with sweeping views of the coast. The permanent collection covers Croatian art from the late nineteenth century onwards, with particular depth in the early and mid-twentieth century. It includes significant works by painters and sculptors associated with the School of Dubrovnik and broader Croatian modernism, alongside pieces by artists from other parts of the former Yugoslavia and international contexts. The museum organises a lively programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, which frequently feature contemporary Croatian artists as well as international artists engaging with themes of identity, landscape, and history. These exhibitions are often accompanied by public lectures, artist talks, and educational workshops. The museum has undergone significant renovation and expansion in recent years and now also includes a permanent display of modernist sculpture in its grounds. A specialist bookshop and a small café are available on site. Given its location close to the Old City walls and the Ploče Gate, the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik is conveniently included in any cultural itinerary of the city.
