Description

The Napier Museum is one of the most architecturally distinctive museums in India, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Established in 1880 and named after Lord Napier, a former Governor of Madras, the museum is housed in an extraordinary building designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm in a bold Indo-Saracenic style, blending Kerala, Mughal, and Gothic architectural elements in a way unlike any other museum building in the subcontinent. The structure features bold colours, elaborate terracotta ornamentation, and a dramatic roofline that has made it an icon of Victorian-era Indo-Saracenic architecture. The museum’s collection includes bronze idols and stone sculptures dating back to the early medieval period, ivory carvings, ancient coins, historical artefacts, a remarkable Kathakali throne, and a large wooden temple chariot that is a highlight of the collection. The adjacent Natural History Museum and the Zoological Gardens, among the oldest in India, complement the cultural museum experience. The Napier Museum is managed by the Department of Museums and Zoos, Government of Kerala, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, with Wednesday hours beginning in the afternoon. It is closed on Mondays and national holidays. The museum is set within a lush tropical campus that is a popular cultural and natural heritage destination for visitors to the state capital.
