Gion Hatanaka Ryokan
Description
Gion Hatanaka is one of Kyoto’s most intimate and authentic ryokan experiences, a small family-owned property tucked into the historic geisha district of Gion, a few minutes’ walk from the famous Hanamikoji street where maiko and geiko may still be glimpsed in the early evening. The ryokan offers a limited number of traditionally appointed rooms featuring tatami mat flooring, futon bedding, yukata robes, and shared or private Japanese baths. Multi-course kaiseki evening meals using seasonal Kyoto ingredients are available to guests, prepared with genuine care and presented with the formality characteristic of Kyoto’s culinary heritage. The property represents an accessible entry point into the ryokan tradition, with rates more modest than the grand ryokan of the Arashiyama or Fushimi districts. English-speaking staff assist guests with navigating the traditions of the ryokan experience — footwear removal, bathing etiquette, and meal service — making first-time visitors feel at ease. Guests are positioned within walking distance of the Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, Chion-in Temple, and the lantern-lit lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line is a five-minute walk away.
