Burma Burma Restaurant & Tea Room
Description
Burma Burma Restaurant & Tea Room brings the rich, layered flavours of Burmese cuisine to Mumbai in a setting that is as culturally immersive as it is culinarily exceptional. Founded by Ankit Gupta and Chirag Chhajer — the former inspired by his mother’s childhood memories of Burma — the restaurant serves a menu of entirely vegetarian and vegan-friendly Burmese dishes that have garnered a loyal following across the city. The Fort location, housed in Kothari House near Kala Ghoda opposite Mumbai University, is distinguished by vibrant Burmese-inspired interiors, rich colour, and the evocative sounds of authentic music, transporting diners to the streets of Mandalay or Yangon. The menu spans soups, noodle-based mains, rice dishes, salads, appetisers, and desserts, with separate icons indicating Jain, vegan, and gluten-free preparations. Signature dishes include the Khao Suey — a coconut milk noodle soup with a full condiment spread — steam buns with curried mushrooms, lotus stem crisps, and a variety of teas carefully sourced to complement the food. Mock meat preparations using jackfruit and other plant-based proteins are handled with exceptional skill. Burma Burma also sells a range of pantry products for home cooking and has expanded to other major Indian cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The Mumbai Fort branch is open daily for lunch and dinner, and bookings are strongly advised.
