Gray’s Papaya

Description

Gray’s Papaya is as much a part of New York City’s identity as the Brooklyn Bridge or Central Park. Founded in 1973 by Nicholas Gray, a former partner of Papaya King, this iconic hot dog stand has been serving some of the city’s most celebrated franks for over five decades from its flagship location on Broadway at 72nd Street on the Upper West Side. The concept is refreshingly simple: natural-casing, all-beef hot dogs grilled on a flat-top until they develop a rich, caramelized crust, served in soft buns with your choice of classic condiments including sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, and sweet onions. What truly sets Gray’s Papaya apart — apart from the unbeatable price — is its selection of tropical fruit drinks, most famously the namesake papaya juice, alongside piña colada, coconut champagne, banana daiquiri, and orange, all non-alcoholic and perfectly refreshing. The restaurant has achieved cult status, appearing in numerous films and television series including You’ve Got Mail, Sex and the City, and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Anthony Bourdain listed it among his favorite New York City restaurants. The Recession Special” — two franks and a drink at a fixed price — has become legendary
