Fabindia

Fabindia is India’s largest retail chain of garments, home decor, furnishings, fabrics, stationery, ceramics, organic foods, personal care products, and handcrafted jewellery sourced from artisans and craftspeople across rural India. Founded in 1960 by John Bissell, an American working for the Ford Foundation, Fabindia was initially an export house for home furnishings before opening its first domestic retail store in 1976. Today it operates over 325 stores across India and internationally. The Mumbai flagship at Jeroo Building on M.G. Road in Kala Ghoda is among the city’s most visited artisan lifestyle stores. Fabindia’s products are mainly sourced from villages across India through community-owned supply-region companies, in which artisans and craftspersons hold equity stakes — ensuring fair wages and sustainable livelihoods. The store’s collection spans hand-block printed and hand-woven textiles, Kolhapuri leather sandals, handloom sarees and kurtas, handmade jewellery, organic skin care, and artisan-made home accessories. Fabindia has been instrumental in bringing traditional Indian crafts into mainstream urban retail and making them fashionable and commercially viable, attracting a loyal customer base of millions of Indians and international visitors who appreciate quality handcraft and ethical sourcing.
