Freitag Store Tokyo Shibuya
Description
Founded in 1993 in Zurich by graphic designer siblings Markus and Daniel Freitag, the brand was born from a practical need for a tough, weatherproof bag that could survive daily bicycle commutes in all weathers. The solution — repurposing used truck tarpaulins — became the foundation of one of the world’s most recognized circular fashion brands. Every Freitag bag and accessory is genuinely one-of-a-kind: the cut and color of each piece depends entirely on which section of a used tarp is used, meaning no two Freitag products are ever identical. The tarpaulins are collected from European logistics companies, cleaned, and cut by hand, ensuring that what would otherwise be industrial waste becomes durable, functional, and stylish urban gear. The Shibuya store, located on Harajuku’s Cat Street in Jingumae, is Freitag’s primary Tokyo retail space and offers one of the largest regional inventories of the brand’s messenger bags, totes, backpacks, wallets, and accessories. The store also houses a repair station where customers can bring damaged Freitag products for professional repair — a core expression of the brand’s commitment to circular design and product longevity. Spare parts including buckles, straps, and zippers are also available, empowering customers to self-repair. Freitag’s SWAP platform allows customers to exchange bags they no longer need for something new to them, furthering the circular loop. The brand is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and publishes detailed environmental impact data. For Japanese customers committed to sustainable accessories with genuine visual uniqueness, Freitag is an unparalleled destination.
