Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
Description
Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, also known as the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens, is one of Israel’s most visited cultural and scientific institutions, located in the Malha neighbourhood of Jerusalem. The zoo takes its distinctive identity from its focus on animals referenced in the Bible and the natural history of the Land of Israel, weaving together cultural heritage and wildlife conservation in a way found nowhere else in the world. Home to more than 250 species and approximately 2,000 animals, the zoo features spacious, well-designed habitats including large enclosures for lions, elephants, hippopotamuses, bears, and a rich collection of bird species. Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is deeply committed to conservation, playing a key role in the successful reintroduction of native species such as the Persian fallow deer, Arabian oryx, and Asiatic wild ass into the wild. It participates in international breeding programmes and conservation research. The zoo’s educational programmes serve hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren each year, making it a cornerstone of environmental education in Israel. Its blend of natural, cultural, and historical significance makes it a truly unique zoological institution.
