Bistro Tribunal, affectionately known as Chez Yf after its passionate owner Yf Geyens, is one of Leuven’s most distinctive and beloved fine dining institutions. Located on the Vaartstraat, opposite the city’s law courts, this MICHELIN Guide-selected restaurant has built its legendary reputation around a single-minded devotion to the finest quality meat, supplied by the prestigious Leuven butcher Rondou. A meat sommelier — one of very few in Belgium — attends to each table with a refrigerated trolley, guiding guests through a selection of exceptional breeds including Wagyu, Galloway, and Côte à l’os, explaining the provenance, ageing, and optimal preparation of each cut. The theatre of this ritual is central to the Bistro Tribunal experience. A gleaming lobster tank sits alongside the meat display counter, and a plateau fruits de mer accompanied by a glass of Champagne is a house classic. The wine list is a splendid celebration of Bordeaux, offered at prices that consistently surprise and delight guests. The service is warm and personal, with French music playing softly in the background. Bistro Tribunal is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday, and for dinner only on Monday.
