Beschreibung

The Fondation Lorin is one of the most intimate and evocative cultural institutions in Morocco, dedicated to preserving the collective memory of Tangier during its storied international years of the 20th century. Founded by Parisian antique dealer and Tangier devotee Joel Lorin, the foundation is housed in a former synagogue in the medina, a building whose architectural bones — chandeliers, wooden galleries, and decorated ceilings — still recall its original sacred function. The museum fills the two-storey interior with a vast and lovingly assembled collection of black and white photographs, vintage posters, postcards, newspaper clippings, handbills, and other printed ephemera that together paint a vivid portrait of Tangier’s unique cosmopolitan atmosphere between the 1920s and 1960s. Visitors encounter images of the city’s celebrated cafés, cabarets, diplomats, artists, smugglers, socialites, and ordinary citizens captured at a moment when Tangier was simultaneously a free zone, a centre of espionage, and a magnet for writers and artists from across the world. The collection includes images of figures such as Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Truman Capote, and Francis Bacon, all of whom were associated with the city. The foundation also organizes temporary exhibitions dedicated to Moroccan visual arts and cultural history. Entry is free and the foundation welcomes donations to support its preservation mission. It is located near the Petit Socco in the heart of the medina.
