Antwerp Zoo
Description
Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest zoological parks in Europe, founded in 1843 and situated at the heart of the city beside Antwerp Central Station. The zoo is renowned for its extraordinary combination of Victorian-era architecture and contemporary animal care standards, with several of its original buildings now listed as heritage monuments. It is home to more than 5,000 animals representing around 950 species, ranging from elephants and gorillas to rare reptiles and aquatic life. The enclosures are continuously updated to reflect natural habitats and promote animal welfare. Antwerp Zoo is deeply committed to conservation science, participating in international breeding programs for endangered species and supporting fieldwork projects across the globe. Education is central to the zoo’s mission, with programmes tailored to school groups, families, and adult learners. Its sister park, Planckendael, complements the zoo’s collection with larger habitats for certain species. Antwerp Zoo’s central location, its rich history, and its ongoing contributions to wildlife research make it one of the most significant zoological institutions in Europe, and an essential destination for visitors to the city.
