Beijing Zoo
Description
Beijing Zoo is one of the oldest and most famous zoological parks in China, founded in 1906 and located in the Xicheng district of the capital. The zoo is particularly renowned for its giant panda exhibit, which draws millions of visitors each year and has been a centrepiece of the zoo’s identity for decades. Home to over 14,500 animals representing approximately 950 species, Beijing Zoo offers one of the most diverse collections of wildlife in Asia, with particular strength in Chinese native fauna including snow leopards, golden monkeys, and giant salamanders. The zoo is organized into themed habitats covering a spacious 89-hectare site, providing environments suited to the animals’ natural needs. Beijing Zoo is affiliated with international conservation organizations and participates in breeding programmes for endangered species. An attached aquarium further expands the range of aquatic life on display. Educational programmes and informational exhibits help visitors understand the importance of biodiversity and wildlife protection. As a historic institution and a key scientific resource, Beijing Zoo remains a major cultural and conservation landmark in China.
