FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture)
Descripción
FiBL — the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture — is one of the world’s foremost scientific institutions dedicated to organic and sustainable food systems. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Frick, Switzerland, FiBL brings together hundreds of researchers across departments covering soil sciences, crop sciences, livestock sciences, and socio-economic dimensions of agriculture. Its work focuses on developing scientifically sound foundations for organic farming and translating research into practical guidance for farmers and policymakers. One of its landmark contributions is the long-running DOK trial, initiated in 1978 near Basel, which compares biodynamic, organic, and conventional farming systems and has produced internationally recognized evidence for the ecological benefits of organic agriculture. FiBL has expanded its influence globally, establishing partner institutes in Germany, Austria, France, and Hungary, and co-founding a European representation office in Brussels. It publishes extensively, including the monthly Bioaktuell journal for Swiss organic farmers, and provides advisory services through courses, technical leaflets, and digital resources. FiBL also co-manages bioaktuell.ch in cooperation with Bio Suisse. The institute operates its own certified organic vineyard, fruit orchard, farm, and restaurant in Frick. Its research informs Swiss federal agricultural policy and supports sustainable food production transitions internationally, making it a pivotal bridge between science, practice, and policy in the global organic movement.
