Navarino Environmental Observatory
Descripción
The Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) is a scientific research initiative located in Messinia, southwestern Peloponnese, focused on environmental sustainability, climate change, and sustainable land use in the Mediterranean region. NEO is a collaborative platform involving Stockholm University, the Academy of Athens, and TEMES S.A., operator of Costa Navarino. The observatory conducts interdisciplinary research on topics including biodiversity, hydrology, soil science, and sustainable agricultural practices, contributing scientific knowledge relevant to the long-term management of Mediterranean ecosystems. NEO also supports the development of sustainable farming practices adapted to local climate and terrain, and serves as a model for integrating research with responsible land stewardship. The initiative promotes international scientific collaboration and hosts field studies, monitoring programs, and educational events. By generating high-quality environmental data and fostering knowledge exchange, NEO contributes to policy development and innovation in sustainable agriculture and land management. Its work is particularly relevant to the challenges facing Mediterranean agriculture, including water scarcity, soil degradation, and the impacts of climate change on crop production and biodiversity.
