Bio Suisse

Bio Suisse is Switzerland’s foremost umbrella organization for organic agriculture, representing over 7,300 organic farmers and producers across the country. Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Basel, it manages the internationally recognized Bio Bud label, which sets standards that go significantly beyond EU organic regulations. Bio Suisse operates through a whole-farm approach, requiring certified operations to convert their entire farming enterprise to organic methods rather than individual fields. Its standards place strong emphasis on biodiversity, soil health, animal welfare, and resource conservation, prohibiting chemical-synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilizers. The organization also enforces strict limits on the use of copper and regulates imports to prioritize products from Swiss and European producers, with overseas imports restricted to items not available domestically. Bio Suisse works across the food chain, collaborating with over 1,300 licensed processing and trading companies that use the Bud label. In 2023, it introduced the Bio Cuisine label for restaurants demonstrating a significant share of Bio Suisse-certified products. The organization advocates at national and international policy levels to advance the interests of organic farming and supports farmer advisory services in partnership with cantonal authorities and FiBL. Through regular inspections by state-approved bodies, Bio Suisse maintains the integrity and consumer trust that have made the Bud label a benchmark for sustainable Swiss food production.
