Drax Group is a major UK energy company that has undergone a significant transformation from coal-fired generation to become one of the country’s largest producers of renewable power, particularly through sustainable biomass. Headquartered in Selby, North Yorkshire, the company operates the Drax Power Station, which has been converted to use compressed wood pellets as fuel, generating the largest volume of renewable electricity from a single site in the UK. Drax also owns and operates a portfolio of hydroelectric and pumped storage stations through its Drax Hydro division. The company is actively pursuing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology, which it believes can make it a carbon-negative company and a significant contributor to the UK’s net-zero goals.
