Ypres Ramparts
Descrizione
The Ypres Ramparts are among the best-preserved urban fortifications in Belgium, with origins dating back to the fourteenth century and significant extensions carried out in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries under the French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Encircling the historic centre of the city, the ramparts evolved over centuries from simple earth walls and moats into a complex defensive system of bastions, advance fortifications, and islands, and played a role in the defence of Ypres during the First World War. Today they form a peaceful green promenade offering scenic views over the surrounding countryside and the historic moat. A signposted walking route of 2.6 kilometres, taking approximately 90 minutes, leads visitors around the ramparts with 23 information panels explaining the history of the fortifications and their significance. The route passes the Ramparts Cemetery, the Lille Gate, and other key sites along the walls. The Ypres Ramparts provide a tranquil counterpoint to the intensity of the city’s wartime memorials and are an important part of Ypres’ broader cultural and architectural heritage.
