説明

The Villa Harris Museum is one of Tangier’s most recent and celebrated cultural institutions, inaugurated in April 2021 by the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco (FNM) under the direction of Mehdi Qotbi. The museum is housed in a magnificent Neo-Moorish villa built in the late 19th century by British journalist and Morocco enthusiast Walter Harris, who was the Times correspondent in Tangier for many years and a close friend of Sultan Moulay Abd al-Aziz. The villa’s architecture combines Moorish and European elements in a style typical of Tangier’s cosmopolitan golden age, with ornamental arched doorways, traditional tile work, and lush gardens that reflect the city’s position as a crossroads of cultures. Following careful restoration, the building was transformed into a fine arts museum dedicated to the artistic heritage of Morocco and its connections to European painters who were drawn to Tangier during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum’s collection presents both Moroccan and foreign artists who depicted the landscapes, people, and light of northern Morocco, including Orientalist painters, early modernists, and contemporary Moroccan artists from the northern school. The exhibitions change periodically and often feature thematic surveys of the artistic relationship between Morocco and Europe. The Villa Harris Museum is located in Tangier’s residential zone close to the Ibis Moussafir hotel and the train station, making it accessible to visitors arriving by rail.
