Herenboeren Nederland

Herenboeren Nederland is an innovative Dutch cooperative initiative that enables citizens to become co-owners of sustainable community farms. Based in Boxtel, the organization develops and supports a growing network of Herenboeren farms across the Netherlands, each jointly owned and governed by a community of local members who collectively invest in and make decisions about their farm. Each farm is managed by a professional farmer who applies regenerative and organic agricultural methods, producing a diverse range of seasonal vegetables, fruits, and animal products for the farm’s member community. The model is explicitly designed to reconnect urban and suburban residents with the food system, giving members direct insight into how their food is grown and the opportunity to participate in farm life. Economically, the model provides farmers with long-term financial stability through guaranteed income from members, freeing them from the pressures of conventional market competition and enabling them to prioritize environmental and social values. Herenboeren Nederland provides training, organizational templates, and ongoing support to help new communities set up their own farms. The model is rapidly expanding, demonstrating strong public appetite for community-based, sustainable food systems.
