Rikolto (formerly Vredeseilanden)

Rikolto, formerly known as Vredeseilanden, is a Belgian international development organization working across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe to promote sustainable agriculture and equitable food systems. Based in Leuven, Rikolto partners with smallholder farmer organizations to help improve their position in food value chains, increase household income, and strengthen resilience in the face of climate change and market volatility. The organization focuses on making agricultural markets more inclusive, transparent, and environmentally sustainable by supporting good agricultural practices, agroecological production methods, and fair trade principles. Rikolto works with local partners rather than implementing programs directly, building the capacity of farmer organizations and local civil society groups to advocate for their interests and improve their own conditions. In Europe, Rikolto also engages consumers, businesses, and policymakers in building demand for sustainably produced food and raising awareness about the challenges facing smallholder farmers globally. The organization’s approach integrates economic empowerment with environmental sustainability and social equity, based on the recognition that a genuinely just food system must benefit producers, consumers, and ecosystems simultaneously.
