The National Art Center Tokyo

The National Art Center, Tokyo, known as NACT, is Japan’s largest exhibition facility, with 14,000 square meters of gallery space spread across a visually arresting building designed by the late architect Kisho Kurokawa and opened in 2007. Unlike most national museums, NACT has no permanent collection of its own. Instead, it functions as a platform for major temporary exhibitions organized in partnership with galleries, foundations, and arts organizations from Japan and around the world. This model allows the museum to present an exceptionally diverse and rotating program, encompassing everything from established fine art to architecture, craft, photography, illustration, and fashion design. The building’s exterior, featuring a sinuous facade of concave and convex glass panels, has itself become an architectural landmark in the Roppongi Arts Triangle. The entrance and atrium are freely accessible without a ticket, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the extraordinary interior architecture and stop at one of several cafes and restaurants, including a branch of Brasserie Paul Bocuse le Musee. Three major exhibition venues within the building operate simultaneously, ensuring that each visit offers something new. The museum is directly connected to Nogizaka Station via Exit 6, making it extremely convenient. Its location in the heart of the Roppongi cultural district, alongside the Mori Art Museum and Suntory Museum of Art, cements it as a cornerstone of contemporary arts in Tokyo.
