Beschrijving

The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) is a national farmer and food movement organization dedicated to building a food and agriculture system in Australia that is fair, sustainable, and rooted in the principle of food sovereignty. Headquartered in Melbourne, AFSA was founded in 2011 and represents a diverse membership of farmers, food producers, consumers, and advocacy organizations committed to transforming how food is grown, distributed, and governed in Australia. The alliance advocates for agroecological farming practices that prioritize ecological health, biodiversity, and climate resilience over chemical-intensive industrial production. AFSA works to defend the rights of small-scale and family farmers, support community-based food systems, and challenge the concentration of power in global agribusiness and food retail corporations. The organization runs the People’s Food Plan, a citizen-developed blueprint for a sustainable, fair, and healthy Australian food system, and engages in policy advocacy at state and federal levels. AFSA also connects Australian farmers and food advocates with the global La Vía Campesina movement, which represents small-scale farmers and peasants worldwide in international food and agricultural policy forums. Its work addresses the full spectrum of food system challenges including seed sovereignty, land access, agricultural trade policy, and the social dimensions of sustainable food production. AFSA plays a vital role in building the political and social foundations necessary for deep, systemic transformation of Australia’s food and agriculture sector.
