Musée Municipal du Patrimoine Amazigh d’Agadir

The Musée Municipal du Patrimoine Amazigh d’Agadir, commonly known as the Amazigh Heritage Museum, is one of the most important cultural institutions in southern Morocco and a vital repository of the intangible and tangible heritage of the Amazigh people. The museum opened on 29 February 2000, approximately 40 years after the catastrophic earthquake of 1960 that destroyed much of the old city of Agadir. Its founding was a conscious act of cultural recovery, intended to preserve the memory of the Souss-Massa region’s Amazigh civilization during the rebuilding of the city. Located in the heart of Agadir on Avenue Hassan II at the Passage Aït Souss, the museum occupies a modern building adapted to house a rich permanent collection of more than 900 pieces linked to Amazigh culture and daily life across three floors. The collection includes traditional silver jewelry from the Souss-Massa region, such as fibulae, bracelets, diadems, and necklaces; traditional clothing and woven textiles including carpets and kilims; wooden tools and agricultural implements; ancient manuscripts and ceramics; and musical instruments. The jewel of the museum is the Massa necklace, an iconic piece of traditional Amazigh adornment displayed in a dedicated treasure room. Guided tours are available in multiple languages and the museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary regional artists, as well as seminars and audiovisual presentations on Amazigh culture. Entry is modest and students are admitted free on certain days.
