Carbon Action (BSAG)

Carbon Action is Finland’s leading carbon farming platform, coordinated by the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) and based in Helsinki. Launched in 2017, the initiative brings together over 100 pioneering Finnish farmers with researchers, companies, and public institutions to develop and test regenerative farming practices that increase soil carbon sequestration and reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The platform operates as a science-based community of practice, providing participating farmers with training, peer learning opportunities, and access to the latest research on soil health and carbon farming methods. Carbon Action collaborates with leading Finnish research institutions, including the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), to develop robust measurement and verification methods for soil carbon changes. The initiative also engages with voluntary carbon markets and policy processes, contributing to the development of frameworks that allow farmers to receive recognition and compensation for their carbon sequestration efforts. Carbon Action has become a model for collaborative carbon farming initiatives internationally and serves as the primary initiative replacing the originally listed Hiiliviljely Finland entry.
