描述

The Sofia History Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the rich history of Bulgaria’s capital city, from its ancient Thracian and Roman origins through to the twentieth century. The museum is housed in one of Sofia’s most striking architectural landmarks, the former Central Mineral Baths building, an opulent structure in the National Revival and Viennese Secession style that was opened in 1913 and extensively restored in the early 2000s. The building’s colourful ceramic facade and ornate interior make it one of the most beautiful public buildings in the city centre. The permanent collection contains an impressive array of archaeological finds, historical documents, maps, photographs, and artefacts that trace the urban development of Sofia through different epochs. Highlights include exhibits on ancient Serdica, the Roman city that preceded modern Sofia, as well as collections related to the Bulgarian National Revival period, the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, and the communist era. The museum regularly organises temporary exhibitions on themes related to Bulgarian and European history, as well as educational programmes for schools, guided tours, and community events. There is also a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of public baths in Sofia, celebrating the building’s original function. The museum’s central location, adjacent to the Banski Square and a short walk from the Presidency and the Ancient Serdica archaeological complex, makes it an ideal first stop for visitors wishing to understand the layered history of the city. A bookshop and café are available on the premises.
